FUELLERS CHARITABLE TRUST

The Trustees are enormously grateful to Members who make donations to the Charitable Trust, whether those are regular (monthly, quarterly, annual) or one-off donations for specific causes and appeals.
It’s important to note that charitable giving isn’t just about money – the gift of time can be just as precious and can often have a more tangible impact on a beneficiary than a cash reward.
There are three ways the Trustees need your help now.  They vary enormously, not just in the ages of the students, but the type of involvement we need.

1.     ARKWRIGHT SCHOLARSHIP 2024-2026, MENTOR REQUIRED!

Arkwright Engineering Scholarships identify and nurture future leaders in engineering.  The Scholarships support high-calibre, engineering-minded students over two years of sixth form before they move onto university, or a higher degree apprenticeship.

As well as sponsoring a scholarship, the Charitable Trust strives to provide a mentor to our students.  Mentors should be experienced individuals who can draw on a share their experience and knowledge; to help them to grow and develop towards their potential, manage changes & grasp opportunities.  Mentoring takes place through an online comms platform, although with the appropriate parental approval, phone calls, site visits and face-to-face meetings can be arranged.  Recent scholars have attended the Fuellers Annual Lecture and the DoE Future Energy Conference, as well as other industry events.

The Trust has awarded its latest Arkwright scholarship to Amy, who has just started Y12 at Waldegrave, a comprehensive school in Richmond upon Thames.  She is studying physics, maths and geography A levels and wants to go on to study Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering.  She writes:
“I have always been fascinated with the idea of aircraft and space exploration.  I am intrigued by the complex workings and technologies involved in the movement of space and aircraft.”  Amy also writes that she’s obsessed with Formula 1 and sees the links between the cars’ aerodynamics with aerospace engineering as they share key principles.

Could you be the mentor Amy needs?  Please let me know!  Please note you’ll need to go through various forms and checks in accordance with Arkwright’s safeguarding policies.

2.     PLATANOS ACADEMY – FUELLERS ACADEMIC LECTURE SERIES, SPRING 2025

The Trust has a long-standing relationship with this academy school

based in Stockwell.  We are relaunch the Fuellers Lecture Series in 2025, the first time they will have taken place since the disruptions of the pandemic.  The lectures are designed to give students access to specialists working in energy, so that they can get a much better idea of what is involved, and the range of opportunities provided by this career path.

The lectures have been very successful, and the students are very bright and enthusiastic participants with a lot of interesting questions. It is a great way of encouraging the brightest students to pursue careers in science, engineering and energy, and to become future Fuellers.

The Lectures will take place on Tuesday mornings – 3 in February and 3 in March.  New for this year is the ability to deliver the lecture (and subsequent Q&A) via Zoom, although personal visits are encouraged.  The timings have to be finally confirmed but will be in the morning.
We are scheduling up to six lectures on the following subjects:

  • What is the Energy Industry?
  • Climate Change / Environment / Renewable Energy
  • How can studying Maths and Science lead to a career in the energy field?
  • What is Engineering?
  • Entrepreneurship – starting your own business

Please let me know if you’d like to inspire some young people and give a Lecture or you’d like some more information before making a decision.

3.     ENGAGEMENT WITH STUDENTS AT CITY UNIVERSITY
The Trust awards annual prizes to the students at City University.  Named for the Company’s Founder Master, Charles Stephenson Clark, the awards are made for the best dissertation projects in City University’s MSc Course in Energy & Environmental Technology & Economics.  Those of you attending the Fuellers’ Advantage in May or the Affiliates Lunch in June may have met one or more of this year’s prize-winners.

The Trust is exploring ways to expand the level of engagement with the students during their course and to this end is planning to hold the following events at City:

  • An event at City University where a small number of Fuellers form a panel to speak for a few minutes on their background and industry and answer question from the floor or questions input previously online. This would be followed by an informal networking opportunity.
  • Fuellers could sit at tables while small groups of students move, in a coordinated fashion, from table to table. Each time the Fueller provides an outline of their background and invites questions from students. This enables all students to have direct contact with each Fueller.

If we’re to arrange this, we need your help!  Please let me know so we can begin to put a panel together to undertake one of these events!

Thank you for reading this – it’s difficult to be more succinct when asking you to volunteer!

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me.  In the meantime, I look forward to receiving your volunteer applications!
