The Greatmoor EfW plant generates electricity from non-recyclable waste rather than sending it to landfill and is the largest single investment Buckinghamshire County Council has ever made. Run on the authority’s behalf by long-term partners FCC Environment, the plant formally commenced operation in July 2016. An EfW is a facility where non-recyclable waste is burned, with the resulting steam powering a turbine, which generates electricity. There are generally two types of outputs, solid waste which includes metals and ash from the incinerator.  At Greatmoor the metals are collected and recycled, while the ash still goes to landfill (but at a small fraction of the volume to that taken up by the waste).  The other outputs are flue gases, which undergo a rigourous physical and chemical cleansing process (under the strict auspices of an Environmental Agency permit) before being released.  The steam powers the turbine and is then cooled before being fed back into the boiler.

We will meet at 2.30pm in the car park and the visit will include a presentation by Stephen Rawlinson, the General Manager, who will then give us a guided tour of the facilities, and will last until approximately 5.30pm.  The visit will include wearing PPE equipment and if anyone attending has their own please let us know as this could allow the number of visitors - the normal group is 15 - to increase. We will be meeting for lunch at a nearby restaurant in Kingswood (probably the Canaletto) at 1230.  The train from London Marylebone at 1057 arrives at Aylesbury station at 1155  and will be met by the Master, who will supervise transport to the lunch, the facility and the return to Aylesbury Station. Those attending by car need not attend the lunch but would be very welcome. The visit involves no cost but those attending the lunch will meet their fair share of the costs.
